The Faces of Death in Polish Contemporary Art
The publication which accompanies the exhibition of the 8th Biennial “Towards Values” is dedicated to the theme of death in Polish art after 1945, “starting with the problem described by the critics as a post-war trauma and up to modern artists”. The book and the exhibition show works by Mirosław Bałka, Tadeusz Brzozowski, Marek Chlanda, Tadeusz Kantor, Marek Kuś, Jerzy Nowosielski, Andrzej Pawłowski, Marek Rogulski-Rogulus, Jonasz Stern, Tomasz Struk, Alina Szapocznikow, Andrzej Szewczyk, Janusz Tarabuła, Marian Warzecha and Andrzej Wróblewski. The publication presents these artists through their own commentaries, memories and interviews, as well as in analytical writing by Wawrzyniec Brzozowski, Marek Chlanda, Krystyna Czerni, Philippe Gand, Rafał Jakubowicz, Anna Król, Jerzy Nowosielski, Marek Rogulski-Rogulus, Tomasz Struk, Andrzej Szewczyk and Jan Trzupek. These texts are preceded by materials written by Eleonora Jedlińska and Jerzy Żmudziński, which relate to art of old centuries, including motifs of death in Baroque and Polish Romanticism periods.
The book is enriched with biographical notes regarding the artists who participated in the exhibition and a list of selected recommended reading.
