Labyrinth of Memory. Faces of Evil 1939-2009 The exhibition is organised at the time of symbolical character, namely on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the World War Two (1939-2009), when...
The video arts were presented within the framework of the exhibition on show at the BWA Contemporary Art Gallery in Katowice and Rondo Sztuki Gallery from July to September 2009th. The showcase featured works by Gordon Matta-Clark, Bill Viola, Sophie Calle, Mona Hatoum, Tony Oursler, Mirosław Bałka and Deimantas Narkevicius, among others.
The exhibition was intended to visually process dormant trauma which has the ability to trigger the mechanics of aggression and hatred. The invited artists, who assumed the role of historians, followed different methods to create their archives, amalgamating shreds and echoes of the past. They felt a pressing need to impose structure on reminiscences. The result was an exhibition presenting private impressions of history assembled from personal testimonies, along with their pop cultural transformations. This extensive publication is comprised of interviews and critical texts, in which media experts, curators and art historians attempt the analysis and interpretation of dozens of films. Depending on the specifics of the works, they discover traces of strategies and manipulations employed in the presentation of history, which were exposed by the artists, or of the vitality conveyed in intimate messages.
