‘As we present readers with a publication dedicated to the 50th anniversary of Biuro Wystaw Artystycznych (BWA, The Art Exhibition Biuro) being open in Katowice, during the years 1949-1999, I have to admit that I am very pleased to see such a broad and in-depth overview of this institution's history. We have decided to publish this monographic work, which has a high documentary value and at the same time provides a cross-sectional analysis, with the aim of presenting the most comprehensive depiction of the BWA in Katowice.
Please note that the publication consists of two separate parts. The first part is an introductory text, while the second part contains a calendar of exhibitions organised by the BWA in Katowice starting with its opening in 1949. This monograph is a highly interesting publishing initiative, as the depiction of one of the major artistic institutions in the Silesian area coincides with a comprehensive presentation of artistic life in this region in the last half a century, thus filling in a serious gap in the local art history.
I firmly believe that the texts included in the publication, as well as the factual and source materials will provide readers with useful introduction and a comprehensive description of the history of the BWA Art Gallery in Katowice.
