Urban action ‘Empire of Dream’ — Justyna Gruszczyk's olfactory installations in Katowice
The project ‘Inessentials’, which is planned for the whole year, involving artists, designers and the local community in a series of meetings, screenings, discussion panels, performances and urban actions. Eminent artists will try to stimulate the need to alter our closest environment, which might in turn lead to a change in our way of thinking about space as a form which affects most of our behaviour. Our guest artists' actions and realisations are supposed to encourage the public to re-design the unwelcoming urban space, converting it into a place where it is possible to settle, create and maintain bonds with others.

In her works, Justyna Gruszczyk rejects the visual and engages the audience's sense of smell instead. Scent becomes a matrix containing information that evokes and triggers certain memories, stories and pictures in our subconscious. Her action entitled The Empire of Dream collects dreams about the city and sets them beside its objective and daytime images. The dreams that have been sent to the author, a documentation of the collective subconscious of Katowice inhabitants, will be played in public areas at a whisper level. At the same time, perfume-maker Piotr Kempski will contribute by creating a drowsy scent, which will be sprayed by the artist in various places around the city.
