Poster art in Poland, known for its formal refinement, flourished owing to the system that existed in this country for over a dozen years, allowing this essentially functional genre to thrive as an enclave of pure art. As it later turned out, development of this specific type of poster in the world of market economy is hindered. Does the growth of mass media diminish the importance of poster art? The Biennial of Polish Poster creates an opportunity to discuss the condition of advertising. Posters presented in the gallery, with their succinctness and orderliness of the visual means employed by the authors, emphasise the problem of chaotic urban space, which is replete with sloppy visual messages.
