The art of painting on silk first developed in India in the second century A.D. It reached Europe around 1920 through Tsarist Russia. There are many silk painting techniques, including Serti which is most popular in France, as well as for example Shibori, which originated in Japan, or Gutta which is used for making contours. The Serti technique covers the silk with beautiful patterns or images with sharply-defined outlines and shapes which do not blur with each other.
Today, silk painting is enjoying a renaissance, with the growing popularity of hand-painted neckerchieves, scarves, ties, blouses and dresses, each one unique. There are no two identical items — even if one template is used to make several items, each piece still has its own distinctive traits.
