Deep Listening is a project combining exhibitions, lectures, performances and meetings with artists. Its title has been inspired by the concept created by composer Pauline Oliveros, who used Deep Listening to observe her body, as a necessary step on the way to listening to the Other.
While the project is underway, the BWA Gallery will become a temporary laboratory for sound research. It will function as a container for storing all sorts of stories, songs, and sounds of wailing, crunching, grinding, breathing and rustling. What all these Deep Listening events have in common is the reciprocity that may be initiated by means of various processes used to activate the perception of the audience.
The exhibition spans three major topics: listening as a scientific tool, therapeutic exercise in mindfulness, and listening — with both affection and criticism — to the surroundings.
