Stanisław Dróżdż (1939-2009) is one of the most outstanding contemporary Polish artists, who has cultivated his original and consistent creation for over forty years. Among over forty works presented at the exhibition, there are large spatial installations, both the well known and those shown only once during his many year’ long collaboration with the Foksal Gallery and the CSW Contemporary Art Centre Zamek Ujazdowski in Warsaw. The idea of the exhibition is to present the creation of Stanisław Dróżdż as an overall output, developed according to one conception throughout the whole life. It is based on an unusually interesting and very coherent vision of the world and of the place taken by the man in relation to it.
The title of the exhibition beginning/end is simultaneously a fragment of one work by Stanisław Dróżdż. It indicates at the most important source of his creation, I mean deliberations on language and his fascination with the problem of space and time and their vague beginning and end. It concerns also the very exhibition which, in the face of the Author’s death — in March 2009 — is a presentation of both his first and his latest works. Unfortunately, no next works would appear…
The subtitle Notionshapes. Concrete Poetry includes the words with which Stanisław Dróżdż used to title almost all his exhibitions, what was to emphasize his faithfulness to the author’s term, thought in the second half of the 60s, and his faithfulness to concrete poetry, the avant-garde phenomenon in twentieth century literature, which operated at the borderland of literature and plastic arts. The creation of this artist from Wroclaw is based on the unusually interesting author’s aesthetics, which, with time, should find its place in the history of world-class contemporary art.
